How to Tell When An Avocado Is Ripe?
Being Avocado farmers, for a big part of the year we live off Guacamole and Smashed Avo! Because of that we are rather picky when it comes to the quality of the avocados we use.
Picking a ready to eat avocado can be tricky. Here are a few tips on How to choose the perfect avocado:
Different varieties have different skin colours. For most of the year Hass avocados are available and seem to be the preferred Australian avocado these days. Ripe Hass avocados will have a skin colour that is dark green to nearly black.
Be aware though that Shepard avocados, often called 'Green Skin' don't change their colour. They are usually available around January-March and the Shepard avocados need their stem attached to stop them from rotting.
We recommend to very, very gently squeeze the avocado, you don't want to bruise the flesh. Is the avocado firm or does it feel mushy? Ripe avocados should yield to gentle pressure without leaving indentations or feeling mushy.
